Hark A Slingshot? Girls With Vagrants? [Jan. 25th, 2010|08:23 pm]
J. Jacques
Tonight's warmup drawing was a couple of characters from two of my favorite webcomics, Girls With Slingshots and Hark! A Vagrant.

(click for big)

I didn't get Jamie's boobs big enough, but I think I did an okay job capturing the surliness and ennui of the Mystery Solving Teens.

EDIT: Look what Kate drew in return! IS HANNERS OMG

I have to say that reasonably-sized boobs is one of the things I've liked best about your drawing, Jeph. Too much of the webcomics world is infested with girls with bowling balls and basketballs on their chests (and frankly, the Internet in general seems to imply most girls have said spheres implanted *IN* their chests).

So, YAY! for A- and B-cup Boobies!

Agreed. I also enjoy the rest of the more realistic touches you get in, like getting Steve to look buff without making him look like a WWE star or a chiseled Greek god... Too many of the webcomics I have seen have trouble with that.

Also, this may sound like a weird compliment, but you do imperfections very well. Cosette's black eye, Hanners' perpetual bag eyes, Marigold's acne... You do a good job of making them noticable while keeping them realistic. I am no artist, but I don't see a lot of that, so I assume that it is difficult to pull off.

Oh, and I guess I like the awesome storyline and stuff...

I've never really been bothered about it, since the majority of the females I know *do* have C-cup or larger.

i'm all for a wide variety of realistic female body types, and jeph totally does a respectable job of that, but i object to the assertion that most of the QC female cast has (er, appears to have, being that they are fictional) A- and B-cup breasts. maybe note the image and preceding text in this informative article? sorry, but a girl who looks like your typical QC cast member is definitely going to have a higher breast-to-bust ratio (and cup size is a ratio, if you didn't know that either) than a B cup. and i'd prefer if that not be conflated with basketball-chest.

I have to say that Jamie from Girls with Slingshots doesn't just have oversized boobs in the style of most over-endowed women in the wide world of comics (and especially in the wide world of intertubes). She is a big girl altogether. Big arms, big tits, big hips, big thighs. She's not fat, really. Just drawn as an overweight, but gorgeous, curvy girl.

Making her "reasonably-sized" makes me a wee bit sad. Especially as an curvy girl of similar proportions to Jamie.

I agree. That is one of my favorite things about Jamie! She is curvy all over and proud to be so!

It might partly be Jeph's erring-on-the-side-of-subtlety thing? It was a ways into QC's run before Faye took on her current shape, so... *shrug* I kind of doubt he intentionally set out to downsize her, at least.

I can see a definite difference between larger body frames (which I tend to associate with the polynesian phenotype) and over-weight.

And to be fair, while I do have a fairly large body frame myself, I am severely overweight, and that part of my size, I think is not a good thing.
