WHAT THE HELL IS THIS BPELT THING ANYWAY

Probably the #1 question I get asked about my drawing process these days is "what is that thing you do where the colors go all crazy?" Well that is the BPelt color flatting plugin for Photoshop, and I made a video that shows how to use it!

Hmmm...the video stops before any colors are applied...

It did that for me, too. Try reloading? I ended up getting the whole thing (I skipped to where it cut off).

All I can see is a black rectangle instead of a (I'm assuming) video window.

Huh, I'm running Firefox 3.5.8, and it's working for me.

Very handy! Thanks for the video. I'll have to check out BPELT for when I color line drawings.

Also chiming in with "Can't watch it". Video stops around 2:30 just as you say 'So now we have two layers'.

Oh, also: Firefox 3.5.8 and the latest adobe flash plug-in. XP Pro. Hmm, also tried turning off Ad-Block, which didn't change anything.

I finally installed Explorer 8, and the video worked for me. Before, when I was using 7, the video was in prepetual loading mode and refused to play at all. Meh, I needed to upgrade anyway. :B

Thanks, Jeph! Very interesting. ^^V (edited for spelling :P)

I don't think I expected his voice to sound like anything, but I didn't expect it to sound that deep.

This was neat. I like your voice. I was surprised it was so deep.

I should note the video worked fine for me, and I use Opera.

Boy was I wrong!

Thanks! I miss the Tutorial page QC used to have, although I'm pretty sure this was your last Photoshop technique I hadn't already stolen independently incorporated into my own art style.

Whats the difference between drawing/coloring in illustrator and photoshop? I saw a tutorial like this from someone else (i forget who)-and they used illustrator.

Dear Jeph,
That was really interesting! Thanks for showing us your process. Incidentally, I think Marten's owl shirt from Friday's strip should be my shirt.

Cheers,

For those who can't get this video to play correctly, use the direct link -

lj-toys is breaking the player. Too much javascript razzle-dazzle?

Holy freakin' crap. It works! And I'd not even watched it on LJ, I went straight to ustream. But that worked. Thank you.

Interesting. I have one question, though: how does the plugin "spreads" the colors "behind" the black lines? It doesn't matter for the lines that make up the line art since they are going to cover these areas in the end, but it does matter for those that are drawn to delineate color boundaries.

[info]caelumgrey

March 3 2010, 19:55:38 UTC 2 years ago

The Flat plugin does this because otherwise you won't get smooth looking lines.

For years I've colored on a layer under a lineart layer, and I've always had to select the individual area on the lineart layer and expand the selection to cover the little gaps when I fill it in below. This would mean I could skip that part.

I hate to be one of those types, but is there anyway you could put this behind a cut? I don't normally mind long posts or big pictures... but the video starts playing everytime I go to my friend's page and it freaks me out to suddenly hear someone talking.
